This 4 lesson Unit is Designed for 8th Grade
Grade 8: With this lesson students will learn about symbolism and how it is used in the Indian art of Rangoli. The presentation contains an explanation of symbolism, a brief introduction to Rangoli, and examples of symbolism in Indian art and culture. The students will work in groups to create their own Rangoli design, and then will have a "competition". With this lesson students will learn about the Indian tribal art of Gond Painting. First, they will have an explanation of the principle of movement in art, and then a brief introduction to the history of the Gond people and their culture. After the introduction students will create their own painting in the Gond style. They will learn to incorporate movement in their painting. Below is the lesson plan outline and the presentation with detailed instructions.
This lesson will take approximately three 90 minute class periods. Students will learn about the principle of pattern and how it is used in the Indian art of henna. The presentation contains an explanation of pattern in art and a brief history of mehndi henna. The students will then create their own henna designs on plaster casts of their hands.
